The Equal Justice Coalition’s (EJC) Walk to the Hill for Civil Legal Aid is an annual event that gathers private bar attorneys, legal aid lawyers, and law students at the Massachusetts State House to ask their legislators to fully fund the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC). In 2024, the EJC will be hosting our 25th annual Walk to the Hill—and the first one back at the Massachusetts State House since 2020!
About the Program: On January 25, hundreds of Walk to the Hill participants will meet face to face with their legislators to advocate for increased MLAC funding in the state budget. Before these legislative visits, attendees will hear from inspiring speakers who support increased funding for civil legal aid in Massachusetts, including a client whose life has been transformed by civil legal aid. Free lunch will also be available. Check back soon for more information about our program.
About Civil Legal Aid: Unlike criminal defendants, people with low incomes who are facing serious civil legal problems—including those related to domestic violence, housing, health care, employment, government benefits, bankruptcy, and elder issues—do not have the right to an attorney in most cases. Legal aid organizations provide essential representation and advice to help vulnerable people protect basic human needs for health, safety, and housing.
With the support of the EJC, MLAC is requesting $55 million in the FY25 state budget to fund additional legal services and address the justice gap. Our advocacy at Walk to the Hill helps make civil legal aid a priority for policymakers.
