Swim for Life, Summer 2020.
Swim in your place. Swim in Provincetown. #swimminginplaceptown
A summer long, global invitation – A Swimming in Place Challenge, Our Place, Your Place – beginning now until September 12, 2020, the designated Swim date.
The 33rd Provincetown Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla begins now through the summer to our virtual online event on September 12. This vital fundraiser raises funds for the healthcare network of the community, sponsored by the Provincetown Community Compact (The Compact). It is a certainty in a time of uncertainty.
This global pandemic has no borders. Please show your longtime love of Provincetown in our time of urgency. Provincetown is a spiritual home to people across the globe. A place of hope and promise.
The Swimming in Place Challenge encourages swimmers, and others, to swim where they are or create a challenge for themselves. Invite your family, friends and coworkers to support you and pledge money while you are dancing, jogging, cooking, biking, sports in place, writing, creating – in your bathtub, on the beach, in a pond or pool or anywhere. A 1.4-mile swim (distance across the harbor)? Five mile jog? 10-mile bike ride? Two-hours of dancing? Personal or team challenges are encouraged. Creatively challenge yourself in challenging times.
On September 12th we will be swimming in our place, not in the healing waters of Provincetown Harbor’, but virtually online. Whether there will be a symbolic Swim with a limited number of swimmers will depend on current social distancing guidelines at the time. The Provincetown Harbor shoreline route is a 1.2-mile swim. See map. Visit us this summer and check out the route.
For this year’s Swim design: In commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrims in Provincetown Harbor in 1620 on the ancestral Native land of the Wampanoag tribe, we invited Native artist Duane Slick of Meskwaki Nation in Iowa, with strong ties to Provincetown, to create this year’s special 2020 Swim design.
This year, more than ever, we hope with your help to exceed our long standing benchmark for the benefit of our beneficiaries and our community. Thank you for choosing Provincetown for your generosity.
The Swim for Life’s essence embodies Provincetown as a place of healing and compassion. We celebrate our community as one that not only cares about our local health and well-being, but also about Planet Earth, which faces unparalleled environmental challenges. Provincetown is a spiritual home to people across the globe. A place of hope and promise. Swimmers have come from France, Bulgaria, Australia, Mexico, Spain, UK, Canada and beyond.
