Help support Boston Day and Evening Academy students as they embark on the school’s third annual summer voyage aboard the Roseway Schooner! BDEA is hosting a sunset sail fundraiser aboard the Roseway and Adventure to ensure access to this transformational experience for our students.
For the last two summers, up to 18 students and two staff have joined World Ocean School on a multi-week sail aboard the 137-foot Roseway. Students transitioned from school to the sea: they lived and slept in constant motion, took daily science and history classes, navigated and maintained the boat, lifted 2-ton sails into the wind during the day, and anchored watches at all hours of the night. Weeks living and working aboard a schooner is not for the faint of heart, but our students are used to adversity and rose to the various challenges. The life-changing experiences, the bonds that developed between students and crew, the shared responsibility, problem-solving and teamwork all contributed to what they proudly call their “Salt Family.”
BDEA students enroll at our school when “traditional” options fail them, and when the difficulties of life circumstances, including homelessness, food and housing insecurity, physical and mental health concerns, safety and trauma, interfere with their education. After each voyage, our students returned more confident in themselves and more focused on their future. Our sailors have become natural leaders in our BDEA community, inspiring other students – and staff – to push themselves and to persist. The learning and exploration our students had are chronicled in an online ship’s log; these memories and reflections will serve as continued inspiration for them throughout their lives.
