Barakat will be holding its 8th Annual Walk for Literacy on September 26th at 10:00 am in scenic Cambridge starting at Winthrop Park. Walkers of all ages will come together to show their support for Barakat’s mission of providing education and advancing literacy for children and women throughout Pakistan and Afghanistan. We hope that you will consider showing your continued support for this cause by joining us for the walk this year.
Barakat is a Cambridge based non-profit that operates five schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan through which more than 2,500 children (over 40 percent of them girls) have graduated in 2014 alone. An additional 544 girls and women graduated from our lower level and higher-level literacy programs in Afghanistan.
66 million girls are out of school globally. In Pakistan and Afghanistan, millions of children are not enrolled in schools, especially girls, who do not have any access to primary education. With your help, Barakat can continue to provide educational opportunities where none exist. To put your financial support in context: here are a few ways to see where every dollar raised will go:
- $250 sends 1 girl 1 year of high school.
- $750 sends 8 students to 1 year of elementary school.
- $1,500 sends 6 girls to 1 year of high school (tuition, uniform & school supplies).
We would love for you to participate and also encourage your friends, family and colleagues to join you to form a team or teams of three or more individuals to participate in the walk. Once a team is established, the first step is to set a fundraising goal. To help in this step and the entire fundraising process, we have put together a Walk 2015 Packet with fundraising tips, sample letter, pledge sheets, a Walk flyer, an overview of Barakat’s schools and programs and a liability release form. Our goal this year is to raise $35,000 and with your help we can achieve this! Your previous support at the past seven walks has helped us to raise over $125,000!
