The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast is Boston’s premier and the nation’s longest-running event dedicated to the memory of Dr. King. The breakfast features engaging speeches, delicious food, live music, and is attended by a diverse gathering of civic, community, and religious leaders from across Massachusetts.
The keynote address will be delivered by Cleveland Sellers, a pioneer of the 1960s civil rights movement. Mr. Sellers was shot in what became known as the “Orangeburg Massacre,” where three South Carolina State students were killed. As the sole conspirator of the events, he was convicted and jailed for inciting a riot in a state trial. The federal government did charge nine state patrol officers with excessive use of force, the first such case of its kind. However, all nine were acquitted of any wrongdoing. Sellers received a full pardon from the South Carolina Governor some 25 years later and is now President of the historically black Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina.
