When we gather for our annual Pope Francis Award gala this year, we will not only be recognizing a most worthy honoree in Anthony Consigli, but also celebrating St. Anthony Shrine’s legacy of doing God’s work in downtown Boston for the last 75 years.
Since 1947, the Church on Arch Street has been the flagship for Holy Name Province’s New England ministry. The physical presence of the buildings, dozens of friars living and working on Arch Street, and the multitudes of people praying inside over the years has had a profound effect. It has become a sacred space that is special to generations of Bostonians.
For more than 50 years, the friars’ primary focus was on Mass and Confession. In 2000, our work at the Shrine took a decidedly different turn, as the friars began to do outreach to the poor and vulnerable on a large scale. That continues today with the more than two dozen ministries we offer.
It is our mantra that all are welcome at Arch Street. We see the very wealthy and the very poor worshiping together, in the knowledge that we are all equal under this roof. We take great pride and satisfaction in the fact that all kinds of people from all walks of life feel welcome here.
As we look forward to the next 75 years, the friars on Arch Street plan to continue the legacy of being the heart and soul of
downtown Boston.
We are especially pleased to honor Anthony Consigli, a man whose life work mirrors the Franciscan values we hold dear, among them compassion, service, stewardship and perseverance. Like the Shrine, Anthony has a legacy worth celebrating as he is the fourth-generation leader of his family’s construction company.
Everything we do at the Shrine is supported by the generosity of our benefactors. The Pope Francis Award dinner is our primary fundraiser for the year. I ask that you consider sponsoring this event at one of the levels detailed in this package. Your gift will truly make a difference in the lives of all those who walk through our door.
Sincerely yours in St. Francis,
Fr. Thomas E. Conway, OFM
