African Repertory Troupe, Inc.–the Other ART, a nonprofit theatre arts organization dedicated to staging works and showcasing performers of African descent, is marking its fifteenth anniversary and relaunch after a three-year strategic planning process. To celebrate, the Other ART is Showcasing Mem Nahadr, a “diva-enigma” with a multi-octave vocal range at UForge Gallery, 767 Centre Street in Jamaica Plain on October 2nd – 3rd, 2015. Tickets range from $10 (standing room only) to $30 (limited seating). Donations are always appreciated as well.
In support, Mem Nahadr will perform her new release, FEMME FRACTALE: An Opera of Reflection: fusing soul, funk, classical and jazz; relishing all the post-Laurie Anderson shapeshifting new technology affords.
“…This record pushes the boundaries of where vocalization can go.”
All About Jazz, 15 July 2015
“Mem’s voice takes the center stage on a number of arias [on] a complex album filled with intricacies…”
Black Grooves, 1 August 2015
FEMME FRACTALE, “equal parts” operatic and industrial, features the multidisciplinary artist’s approach to progressive soul: contemporary rhythms [join] classical soundscapes; …a complex production of aural textures.”
Exclaim Canada, 5 August 2015
As with her highly-regarded 2009 release, ECLECTICISM, Nahadr “simply arrests the listener with an urgent, eruptive clarion; a kind of primal ecstasy…the flurry of high notes and the quivering vibrato held with a grace that puts gospel and opera in near perfect balance…. Basically, she gets the theatre of song.”
