The Passport to College Program at the Boston Higher Education Resource Center (HERC) is a ground-breaking 18-month college readiness experience crafted to increase, significantly, first-generation students’ odds of enrolling in, and graduating from, college. Our community-based program which meets weekly afterschool at our Boston center recruits rising juniors at various private and public schools in and outside of Boston each year.
Why be in Passport? Passport Scholars are an elite community focusing on paving a path to college and beyond. If a student has shown an interest in going to college, has the academic acumen (2.0 GPA minimum requirement), and the motivation required to achieve a higher education– we want them! Passport focuses on empowering students who would be among the first in their families to go to college. They may not have an exact idea of how to get to college or pay for it – and that is precisely where Passport to College comes in.
For 18 months, in addition to receiving college and scholarship advice, Passport Scholars participate in a curriculum specifically targeting first-generation students, designed to inculcate them with the “Habits of the Mind” (such as time management skills, project management skills, financial management, and relationship management) that first-generation students seldom pick up either at home or at school. We believe that a student can do more than just graduate from college – we believe that a student has the potential to become a world-changer.
Throughout the Passport experience, we will help students navigate the world of college admissions, financial aid and applying for scholarships. They will also have an opportunity to participate in college tours, and engage in character-building workshops with the Passport Coach who will be available for them in class and during weekly office hours at Boston HERC.

Rising Junior Student:
- Once a student completes a Passport to College application they will attend ONE information night on April 4th, 6th & 11th at 6:00 pm.
- The location for this event will be on the 4th floor of the HERC offices at 62 Northampton Street Boston, MA 02118. This is an informative session meant to underscore the depth of our program services. At least ONE parent or legal guardian is required to attend this event with the student!
- The last step for student enrollment into our program is to attend ONE student interview session which will be held on April 18th, 20th & 25th at 4:00pm.
