The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy (rosekennedygreenway.org) announces the return of Caroling at the Carousel, a three-event series featuring free performances by local choirs singing holiday music and a ton of related free, festive activities! This is the second year of the series and is held next to the one-of-a-kind Greenway Carousel at the Tiffany & Co. Foundation Grove across from Faneuil Hall. The events will take place from 5:30pm to 6:30pm each of three Friday evenings: December 2, December 9, and December 16.
Caroling at the Carousel has quickly become an anticipated holiday tradition on The Greenway, pairing one of Boston’s best family-friendly attractions with renowned local musicians, seasonal treats from small local vendors, and a healthy amount of holiday cheer!
New this year, Caroling at the Carousel has incorporated The Greenway’s new Play Program, which organized a series of activities throughout 2016 that focused on the educational benefits of unstructured play. At Caroling at the Carousel, the Greenway Play Program will facilitate Lantern-Making (Dec. 2), Make-Your-Own Caroling Books and Pomanders (Dec. 9), and Make-and-Take Toys (Dec. 16). Also new this year will be programmatic offerings from various community partners. Attendees will enjoy making bird feeders with Boston Harbor Now (Dec. 2 & 16), designing gingerbread houses with the Boston Society of Architects (Dec. 9), and visiting with the Boston Ballet’s famed Dancing Bear, who will give out Nutcracker crowns (Dec. 16).
Also new this year, The Greenway will be unveiling a rebooted Winter Lighting program that will include a special interactive light and sound experience at the Greenway Carousel. The Greenway Carousel light show will take place at 4:15pm, 4:45pm, 5:15pm, 5:45pm each evening, and at 6:15pm during Caroling at the Carousel.
The Conservancy has again partnered with the nearby Boston Public Market to offer attendees complimentary treats from BPM’s popular local vendors, including Taza Chocolate (Dec. 2 & 9), Red Apple Farm (Dec. 16), and Jennifer Lee’s Gourmet Bakery (all three nights.)
The one-of-a-kind Greenway Carousel at the Tiffany and Co. Foundation Grove ($3/ride, open Friday-Saturday-Sunday until December 18, and every day except Christmas between December 23 and January 2) will be open until 7pm each of the three Caroling Fridays. The characters on the Greenway Carousel—lobster, cod, squirrel, and 11 more—are inspired by the drawings of Boston school children and were sculpted by a Newburyport, MA artist. The Greenway Carousel sits near the North End and the Wharf District neighborhoods, across from Faneuil Hall Marketplace and Christopher Columbus Park, and a short walk from the Freedom Trail and New England Aquarium.
“We pride ourselves on The Greenway being a destination for free family fun throughout the year, and Caroling at the Carousel has already turned into one of our most eagerly anticipated annual events,” said Jesse Brackenbury, Executive Director of the Greenway Conservancy. “We’ve stepped up Caroling this year to include our Play Program, a special light show, and even more community partners! We hope visitors will enjoy Caroling at the Carousel along with Faneuil Hall’s Blink!, Christopher Columbus Park’s trellis lights, and dinner out.”
The December 2nd musical performance will feature East Coast Soul, a Boston-based, award-winning funk, soul and R&B ensemble. East Coast Soul is comprised of a collection of Berklee professors, alumni and other elite performers who have curated a timeless repertoire complete with their own unique, soulful style and energy. The December 9th performance will take you back in time featuring the Songful Artists of Boston, Massachusetts. The Songful Artists – Original Dickens Carolers – will perform in classic Victorian caroling style. They are an a cappella quartet with a timeless feel. They spread cheer with their traditional holiday carols in 4-part harmony. (songfulartists.com) The Back Bay Ringers (BBR), an advanced, auditioned community handbell ensemble based in Boston, will also join this evening of Caroling. Founded in 2003, BBR has quickly developed a reputation for excellence and is committed to preserving and promoting Boston’s key role in the history of bell ringing. The first community handbell ensemble in the United States was founded by Beacon Hill resident Margaret Shurcliff in the early twentieth century. (backbayringers.org)
The December 16th performance will feature will feature the NEMPAC Community Holiday Choir. Back by popular demand this fun North End neighborhood choir has returned to enchant Bostonians with their family friendly tunes. Under the direction of the talented Rhaea D’Aliesio this choir includes members of all ages. (nempacboston.org/archives/6604)
