On Friday, Oct. 14, hundreds of foodies will unite and enjoy a dine-around experience generously donated by local restaurants during Party Under the Harvest Moon, an annual benefit for Food For Free. The event will include food and beverages generously donated by local restaurants and caterers, live music and a silent auction. The goal is to raise $70,000.
Car Talk’s Ray Magliozzi, WBUR’s Here and Now host Robin Young, owner of the Comedy Studio, Rick Jenkins and Executive Director of Food For Free, Sasha Purpura will lead the evening, serving as the night’s emcees and special guests. One Thin Dime will perform local favorites. Auction items will include a week-long stay at a Chandler Cottage in Manomet, Mass., a weekend getaway in Cape Cod, the Berkshires, Vermont or New Hampshire, tickets from Southwest Airlines, a private tour from the rooftop farm at Fenway Park, and more!
“Food For Free was born out of love for the community by the community,” says Sasha Purpura, executive director of Food For Free. “Staying true to the organization’s founding, this event is wonderful in that members of the community come together for their love and enjoyment of good, healthy, delicious food and in turn they are helping to support their hungry neighbors in need.”
Last year, Party Under the Harvest Moon raised $67,000. All proceeds from the event go directly to support the nonprofit’s food rescue, school and transportation programs. Since 1981, Cambridge-based Food For Free, has responded to local hunger by rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste, and distributing it to local emergency food programs including food pantries, youth programs, shelters, and more. Through a combination of food rescue, farming, and transportation programs, the organization’s year-round services give people access to fresh fruits and vegetables, which are typically lacking from the diets of low-income individuals and families.
As one of the nation’s first food rescue programs, Food For Free feeds more than 30,000 families annually in Boston and beyond distributing food to more than 100 programs in Arlington, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Lynn, Malden, Medford, Peabody, Somerville, and Watertown.
The event is made possible by the support of Food For Free’s Leadership Sponsors, Cambridge Savings Bank and MIT. Wine, beer and soft drinks will be donated by Three Thieves, Cambridge Brewing Company and Polar Beverage. Food will be provided by Ace Bakery, Baraka Café, Bfresh, Dave’s Fresh Pasta, Effie’s Homemade, Harvard University Dining Services, Henrietta’s Table, iCater, Manoa Poke, Middle East Restaurant and Nightclub, Nubar, Q’s Nuts, Royal East Restaurant, Russell House Tavern, Sofra, Something Savory Catering, Specialty Foods, Subzero Ice Cream, Veggie Galaxy and Viale.
