Come and join us as we launch the “Ultimate Social Media Experiment in Long Distance Learning for Teens on Earth’s Most Remote Location.” Dr. John Chittick is a visionary and education activist (Harvard, MIT, Dartmouth, Deerfield) who is realizing his 40-year-old pledge to return to this isolated island to establish “Atoll Academy.” The goal is to help indigenous youths engage with peers globally through the democratic use of social media. Tech firms are assisting with internet connectivity using microwave and satellite technologies with solar and wind energy. As sea levels rise and threaten these tiny, low-lying spits of land, the students are capturing their millenniums-old, traditional culture on handheld video devices before their history disappears forever. Chittick uses the Socratic Method to teach both girls and boys (15-19) how to integrate and communicate with the international community while preserving their unique heritage using modern tools available to all other teens worldwide. Dr. Chittick’s goal is to secure scholarships for graduates to overseas universities and exchange programs so they will gather the necessary skills to lead their emerging nations upon their return.
The doors open at 6 pm, valet parking is available, donations are accepted, with complimentary gourmet hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Videos will illustrate the project with discussion. He will explain why a 68-year-old is moving permanently to this coral atoll. Youths in the vast Pacific deserve equal access to choose their paths in life, regardless of their humble upbringing, and champion their ancestors’ remarkable achievements with our donors’ support. Previously, this region was ignored as a U.S. territory after World War II.
Dr. Chittick is the full-time volunteer director of the non-profit TeenAIDS-PeerCorps (Teenaids.org), a 501(c)(3) dedicated to empowering youths to take responsibility for their generation’s health decisions by stopping the further spread of HIV/AIDS.
