Blue Hill Observatory:
The first weather observations were made on February 1, 1885 at BHOSC and from that date on an unbroken climate record has been maintained. This remarkable resource, which is the most homogeneous climate record in North America, is a benchmark station for the study of climate change.
Our Mission and Funding:
We are a private non-profit institution with a mission is to increase public understanding of atmospheric science. Our daily operations and educational programs rely solely on the generous support of our members and volunteers.
Community Service and Education:
BHOSC has engaged more than 50,000 students over the past 9 years in on-site or school-based weather-related educational programs, now averaging close to 10,000 students each year.
BHOSC helps teachers enhance their science curriculums and introduces students to important scientific fields of study, including meteorology, oceanography, geology, and astronomy.
BHOSC continues to implement a unique middle and high school program for young women (Women in Natural Science—WINS). The program inspires young women to learn about natural sciences through hands-on learning experiences with meteorology, marine biology, oceanography and astronomy. The program encourages these women to pursue careers in science and more than 300 girls have participated in the program over the years.
